There are many motivations for reducing your energy consumption, ranging from the economic to the environmental. But how about turning off some lights to keep up with your neighbor? Some American utility companies are finding that a little healthy competition can be a great incentive.
As the New York Times reports, utility companies in several American cities are trying “comparative” energy bills to make customers aware of how much energy they use relative to their neighbors. Smiley faces are awarded for relatively low energy rates. (Originally frowns were used for poor results, but they were discontinued after complaints were made).
Positive Energy of Washington D.C. creates the reports, and early results are encouraging: customers who are aware of how they rate have reduced their consumption by 2 percent. Think you can beat that?
